Talking about Thomas L. Friedman: The open-door bailout – International Herald Tribune

Quote

Talking about Thomas L. Friedman: The open-door bailout – International Herald Tribune
"Dear America, please remember how you got to be the wealthiest country in history. It wasn’t through protectionism, or state-owned banks or fearing free trade. No, the formula was very simple: Build this really flexible, really open economy, tolerate creative destruction so dead capital is quickly redeployed to better ideas and companies, pour into it the most diverse, smart and energetic immigrants from every corner of the world and then stir and repeat, stir and repeat, stir and repeat, stir and repeat."

We just had new elections here. Those that want the government to give them things for free won. History will repeat itself and this time the world will experience GD 2.0.

Those of us here who prepared will ride this out and will be able to recreate opportunity again.

Forefathers

In order to put the current economic situation in perspective one only needs to be a student of history and current events:

"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered."

Thomas Jefferson 1802

We have for the last couple of years focused on paying down debt and to date we are in a manageable situation. So much so that we are expanding our business into a different area but related to our core business plan.

Reasons for small business to save their cash

That is what happened to us in the twenties. We sustained high levels of employment in that period with the aid of an exceptional expansion of debt outside of the banking system. This debt was provided by the large growth of business savings as well as savings by individuals, particularly in the upper-income groups where taxes were relatively low. Private debt outside of the banking system increased about fifty per cent. This debt, which was at high interest rates, largely took the form of mortgage debt on housing, office, and hotel structures, consumer installment debt, brokers’ loans, and foreign debt. The stimulation to spending by debt-creation of this sort was short-lived and could not be counted on to sustain high levels of employment for long periods of time. Had there been a better distribution of the current income from the national product — in other words, had there been less savings by business and the higher-income groups and more income in the lower groups — we should have had far greater stability in our economy. Had the six billion dollars, for instance, that were loaned by corporations and wealthy individuals for stock-market speculation been distributed to the public as lower prices or higher wages and with less profits to the corporations and the well-to-do, it would have prevented or greatly moderated the economic collapse that began at the end of 1929.

Taken from:

Inequality of wealth and income

Marriner S. Eccles, who served as Franklin D. Roosevelt‘s Chairman of the Federal Reserve from November 1934 to February 1948, detailed what he believed caused the Depression in his memoirs, Beckoning Frontiers (New York, Alfred A. Knopf, 1951)

In today’s terms my interpretation is that there are too many on Wall Street using our investments to create products that have gone far beyond job creation and have been USED to create wealth for investment bankers as monetary creations that have no effect on creating wealth for small business, but only themselves.

Anyone who accepts the coming bailout of trillions of dollars to these firms should be held to the utmost scrutiny. Those that got us in this situation should be held without bond in a Guantanamo style jail system until trial.

Small Business Manufacturing addin for Office Accounting

Test machine setup:

Vista SP1
OA Pro 08 SP1

This addin would not install automatically. Had to do it this way:

From Utilities/Addin Manager

Select "Install New" then you would need to look in this file:

Microsoft Small Business. The select Small Business Accounting Addins

Open, then select SMB_UI.dll :

Small Business Manufacturing should start the install process from here. It takes what seems like a long time to install (approx 20 mins). After the installation is complete you should see Small Business Manufacturing as an available addin for OA Pro 08:

It is a top level menu option:

The addin has some problems with the above test machine configuration:

Also some user interface issues with Vista:

All lines following the name of the item are unreadable in white text until you tab over:

Cannot access the help files in any window:

Refund or over payment

Yes, nicely stated.
For now you would need to receive only the correct amount invoiced. There is no current way to reconcile over payments and keep your books correct easily… If you deposit the amount recieved partially and there is any discepancy on the original amount invoiced your books will always be out of balance. In any version to date.
You would to date need to receive only the correct amount per invoice.

Tailoring Invoices to fit your business

If your business processes Invoices that require a field for "unit of measure" start by adding this field to an item. This can be any random item in your Inventory. Follow these steps:

Open an Item:

Select the user defined fields tab:

then new fields:

At this point select any of the options available. If you want a numeric field choose between Text and Number. If you choose number for your new field it will reflect on your invoice this way, 1,234,567. If you don’t want this format select text then name the new field:

Now, open a new Invoice then select Modify Layout:

In form section select columns or anywhere you want to put the new field on your invoice:

Add it to: show these fields in order. Move your new field up or down for how you want it to show on your invoice:

User Defined Fields are for internal use…

Import Office Accounting 08 item list into my Office Live account

Setup an application in beta Business Applications called schedule that I have synchronized with my Outlook Calendar successfully. Outlook  with BCM has been integrated with my Office Accounting 08 database and am trying to import my OA item list to my OL account via Excel:

and get this:

stuck at this point:

in OA 08 I have this:

if I had the time to figure out how to correspond the 3 together so all 3 fit then could likely figure this out. But, since we are a small business with limited time devoted to mostly keeping up with accounting for our business this is not a current option.

Could anyone provide some guidance here? Realize that this beta in Office Live but would appreciate some input.

OA 08 restore problem

Updated as of 4/18/08:

The problem originally occurred apparently with syncing Outlook w BCM and OA 08 with my Office Live account using the provided Time Manager. I created a clone version of my work schedule using Beta Business applications called schedule then synce’d this with Outlook. Have had no problems since…

Recently have had a problem with my install of OA on my Vista laptop.

Some history:

Lapper goes from work to home. Work is an SBS 2003 domain, home is Vista shared network, lapper not joined to domain just Internet access and restored to. Recently we changed routers and reconfigured the domain for network access for the company boxes. That is when the problem started.

Problem:

I can restore to and use OA 08 as long as I am at work and also at home as long as I do not close and try to reopen OA at home. Tried restoring to at home and get this error message:

Can restore to this lapper at work using the SBS domain but not on a Vista shared network.

Dennis, as per your email after our conversation today:

Chris,

I have discovered the issue with my backup file. The file was created on SBS 2003 R2 under the Administrator name. Office Accounting 2008 was installed on the server and integrated with BCM. This set a folder system that is unique to SBS. Here is the folder system from the error message.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Business Contact Manager\MSSmallBusiness.mdf

And

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Business Contact Manager\MSSmallBusiness.ldf

Both of these directory file paths were created during the setup process of OA2008 and BCM on the network share. This  makes it unique to the world by using another SQL database default name MSSMLBIZ. When this is setup in a multiuser network the name cannot be MSSMLBIZ it must be MSSmallBusiness and include the path at each workstation on the network.

I have attempted to provide an explanation that is as descriptive as I can get. If you need any more info just contact me and I will attempt to explain. I think I need to post this on the partner site and see if I get any reply from Microsoft. I don’t think they took my prior posts very serious.

Here is the error message that shows up whenever I attempt to restore the database.

Directory lookup for the file “C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Business Contact Manager\MSSmallBusiness.mdf” failed with the operating system error 5. (Access Is Denied)

File “MSSmallBusiness_dat” cannot be restored to “C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Business Contact Manager\MSSmallBusiness.mdf”. Use with MOVE to identify a valid location for the file.

Directory lookup for the file “C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Business Contact Manager\MSSmallBusiness.ldf” failed with the operating system error 5. (Access Is Denied)

File “MSSmallBusiness_dat” cannot be restored to “C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Business Contact Manager\MSSmallBusiness.ldf”. Use with MOVE to identify a valid location for the file.

Problems were identified while planning for the RESTORE statement. Previous massages provide details. RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally.

I think I understand why this is occurring but I am not certain how to resolve the errors. Can anyone of the Microsoft folks help me with this?

Thanks,

Dennis Pillow

That is what I am going to post tonight.

Dennis Pillow

Dennis, Did not have time this evening to try the KB article mentioning the referred SQL Express update that I mentioned today. Got home after 8 central. Luck on your MPAN post. As well you could post your void question there also.
